![]() ![]() It can be dreary and rote, like when she talks to the founder of Ashley Madison and his wife about the state of their marriage, or to Willie Nelson about his burgeoning weed empire. The show can be fascinating, particularly when it delves into Handler’s neuroses, by showing her discussing topics with her shrink, or drawing pictures of her family under the influence of Ambien, or talking to her father about whether he liked any of her boyfriends (he didn’t). (She doesn’t, she admits, entirely understand what Netflix is.) She can’t figure out if she’s the host or the subject-whether she should be pointing out the many ways in which she’s the real-life model for Trainwreck, investigating modern phenomena, or simply adapting her outrageous late-night comedy shtick for a Netflix audience rather than a live studio one. Throughout Chelsea Does, its star seems confused as to what role she’s supposed to play: She’s alternately guarded and brazen, defensive and unapologetic, naughty and nice. This isn’t Handler’s fault so much as it’s the inevitable byproduct of trying to fuse reality TV and documentary into one cohesive whole. The difference is that the show’s only underlying theme is Handler herself, and that it seems intent on handling topics like racism and Silicon Valley and drugs without ever being willing to shift its gaze away from her. Instead, its director Eddie Schmidt-a longtime documentary producer whose credits include This Film Is Not Yet Rated, Beauty Is Embarrassing, and Valentine Road-seems to have decided to make a docuseries in the manner of Anthony Bourdain’s Parts Unknown, or Foo Fighters: Sonic Highways. If Chelsea Does were less turned off by the conceptual limitations of being a star vehicle with a very funny, innately cynical person at its helm, it could be either a groundbreaking examination of comedy or a very funny, innately cynical reality show that ran out of material after two episodes. ![]() ![]() The people she encounters in Chelsea Does include a matchmaker, a polyamorous triad, and a woman whose business is setting up video-chatting for pets, and Handler’s eyebrows twitch so furiously while she talks with them that they make the case for having their own category at the Emmys. She’s also a powerful woman in Hollywood who’s almost pathologically unable to not say what she’s thinking. There are arguments to be made for both: Handler was for many years the only female late-night host on television, and her raunchy, deliberately outrageous brand of humor paved the way for the current Schumerian era of comedy. The main problem with Chelsea Does, a four-part Netflix docuseries centered around the comedian Chelsea Handler, well, doing things, is that it doesn’t know which one of these genres it should aim for. ![]()

The crime drama’s relatively low ranking reflects our love/hate relationship with this wildly popular show. Theirs was among the most formidable of TV partnerships. The combustible chemistry between Spacey’s morally rotten politician and Robin Wright’s quietly ambitious wife was the engine that powered - and grounded - those first five occasionally brilliant, albeit uneven, seasons. But the show put Netflix on the map, and for good reason. The real-life #MeToo scandal that led to leading man Kevin Spacey’s firing in the sixth and final season (and the Godawful eight episodes that were patched together in the wake of it) will forever cast a shadow over David Fincher’s political thriller. While some tools are included in these programs for sorting and finding duplicates, PhotoSweeper by Overmacs is a $10 utility that hopes to make the process even easier. Although programs like iPhoto, Aperture, and Lightroom try to help with keeping photos organized, multiple cameras types, accidental extra imports, and even simple file duplications are bound to happen. Photosweeper currently sells for $10 on the Mac App Store. If you’re like me, your digital photo library may span years-even decades. ![]() But I'm too much of a digital hoarder to take that step! ![]() This is really good for when you snapped 15 pics of the same thing so that one might turn out ok. At no point did I get that sinking feeling of "there is no undo."įinally, I should mention that Photosweeper also has a "photo similarity" mode that finds not only duplicates, but very similar series of photos. It does this in a very accountable, safe way. 34GB is nothing to sniff at and getting rid of those duplicates is the first step to consolidating all my files. In all, I was really impressed with Photosweeper. Lesser software might have moved all the iPhoto files to the OSX Trash, leaving the iPhoto library broken. Once you bite the bullet, it does exactly the right thing with every duplicate: iPhoto duplicates get put in the iPhoto Trash, Lightroom duplicates get marked "Rejected" and put in a special "Trash (Photosweeper)" collection, and filesystem duplicates get moved to the OSX Trash. This is in stark contrast to iPhoto's lame "hey, this is a duplicate file" dialog that shows you two downscaled versions of the images with no further information. Click on each file and the full path (even within an iPhoto or Aperture library) becomes visible. Best of all, this view shows everything you need to make sure you're not deleting a high-res original in favour of the downscaled version you emailed your family: filename, date, resolution, DPI, and file size. It places duplicates side-by-side, marking which photo it will keep and which it will trash. If a duplicate was found within iPhoto, it should keep the most recent one.īut, third, what makes Photosweeper truly useful: it won't do a thing without letting you review everything, and it offers a great reviewing interface. In my case, I told it to keep iPhoto images first (since these are most likely to have ratings, captions, and so on), then Aperture, then whatever's on my HDD somewhere. Second, it lets you automatically define a priority for which version of a duplicate photo to save. First, it is happy to look at all the sources I mentioned above, and compare pics across them. There's a lot to love about Photosweeper. (I was too excited to take screenshots of the process, unfortunately!) I used it yesterday to clear 34GB of wasted space on my HDD. Thankfully, there is an excellent OSX app called Photosweeper made for just this purpose. So, the first step to photo sanity is to get rid of these duplicates. A lot of these might be duplicated because, for example, you were just trying out Lightroom and didn't want to commit to it so you put your pics there but also in Aperture. You should definitely read those.īut, while Apple and/or Dropbox get their act together (I'm not holding my breath), you have to make sense of your photos in your Pictures folder, in your Dropbox Photos folder, in various other Dropbox shared folders, on your Desktop, in your Lightroom, Aperture, and iPhoto collections, and so on. Peter Nixey has an excellent post on the disappointing state of affairs (to put it kindly) and an excellent follow-up on how Dropbox could fix it. This eats up precious storage space and makes finding that one photo an exercise in frustration. As new cameras, software, and online storage and sharing services come and go, our collections end up strewn all over the place, often in duplicate. It's no secret that the photo management problem is a huge mess. ![]() ![]() ![]() We are committed to safeguarding our customers’ data, services and deployments across our expansive global platform. An EQualization charge can go to 16.2v, but only after the battery has spent several houra in the 14.8v range and is otherwise 'fully' charged. When I checked on the charger after 1:40 is was making 15 amps at 15.79v, which is very abusive. I used my schumacher sc2500a on a neighbor's unintentionally depleted to dead, group 27 starting battery. I've a growing contempt for automatic smart chargers as they cannot seem to ever complete the job, dropping to float votlage very prematurely when the battery is still far from fully charged. But it is kind of neat to get a 30 amp adjustable and fully manual charger for such a low price. I realize the impracticality of this approach for the 99.95% of readers. I snipped the legs to the micro potentiometer and soldered wires to reach a 10 turn Bourns potentiometer rated for thousands of cycles. It will not adjust voltage automatically for actual battery temperature, but it is not difficult to adjust it with a jewewlers screwdriver. I recommend splicing a wattmeter on the DC output: ![]() The little voltage adjustment potentiometer is only rated for 25 or 50 adjustment cycles though. I'd have no issue putting it on a battery that cannot accept more than 30 amps. The linked product above has a fairly wide voltage range, from the mid 12 to mid 15v range. as well as overvoltage and overtemperature protections. After 17 minutes at 38 amps, the magic smoke released and I then bought a much higher quality Meanwell powersupply (rsp-500-15) that has constant current limiting on overload. When I got sick of twiddling voltage I sacrificed it to science and just set it to 14.8v and let it go on a depleted battery. I used one of these as a regular 30 amp bulk and absorption charger, and it would actually do 38 amps, but made this clicking noise over 36 amps, and I had to adjust voltage to keep it under 36 amps and keep twiddling voltage upward for the first half hour, as the well depleted battery recharged. The Tinkerer who does not mind a little hands on adjustment can utilize one of these adjustable voltage inexpensive power supplies: Obviously it would be great if such a maintainer come with a battery temperature sensor and perhaps a toggle from 13.2v for a flooded battery and 13.6v for a AGM.
